The picture that started it all

This story began in 2020, during the long, strange months of the lockdown, when the whole world stood still and all of us had more time to think than we wanted.

It started with one picture in my head: a young bride on a hilltop in Munnar, holding a cup of tea, and a small black bird dropping out of a tree.

A black bulbul perched on a branch above misty tea hills
A black bulbul, the small black bird with the red beak.

I did not know who she was. I did not know why the bird mattered. I only knew I could not stop seeing it.

Everything else grew from that picture, slowly, over several hundred hours and more drafts than I can count. Characters changed their names. Whole chapters disappeared. Some people I thought were villains turned out to be something more complicated, the way people usually do.

Six years later, that picture is on the cover of my first novel. If you read the book, you will find out why the bird matters. I promise it is worth the wait.
